Overview
The Université Paris-Sorbonne was founded in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon. A theology school, then a renowned university, it has passed through periods of glory and crisis, including successive fires. Today there remains the Chapelle de la Sorbonne, which dates to the 17th century and contains the tomb of Richelieu, but the other buildings were rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The remarkable paintings of Puvis de Chavannes and Henri Martin adorn the amphitheaters and some galleries. In 1970, with the reform of Edgar Faure, the institution became the Université de Paris IV (Paris-Sorbonne). It now has 17 departments and 26,000 students, including more than 4,500 foreign students. There are 900 faculty members.
