(Make Music Day)

Presented by the Alliance Française Melbourne, France Alumni and hosted by DJ Edd Fisher, a key figure in Melbourne’s music scene of late, the 2016 Fete de la Musique (Make Music Day) main event will be held at the Memo Music Hall on Sunday 19 June from 2.30pm until 9pm.

Fête de la Musique was first launched in France in 1982 and has since become a worldwide annual event celebrating all music genres via free concerts in more than 120 countries spread over five continents.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Fete de la Musique is celebrated on the 21^st June (the summer solstice) with many concerts held outdoors. Here in beautiful wintery Melbourne, what better place than the iconic Memo Music Hall to gather all Melburnians to celebrate music!

In keeping with the spirit of the event of:  “all kinds of music”, the Alliance Française has put together an impressive line-up, inviting local performers to the stage to entertain you into the evening.

This June, two free events will be held in St Kilda:

- On Thursday 16 June, (6pm to 7.30pm) the students of Elwood College and the Trio Benoit featuring Dave Evans (accordion), James Sherlock (guitar) and Adam Spiegl (double bass) will perform in the St Kilda Library.

- On Sunday 19 June, from 2.30pm, the Memo Music Hall welcomes the main Fête de la Musique event, featuring four exciting local live acts: Ali Barter, Penny Ikinger, Baro and The Seven Ups

Ali Barter covers a gamut of styles, from electronic to folk, pop to blues and indie. Each track showcases her clear, soprano tone which elevates with every note she sings.Her new single called Far Away replaces the languid and nostalgic pop of Barter's previous releases with rock'n'roll punch.

Penny Ikinger  (4.30PM)  
Australian-born PENNY IKINGER is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso, singer and songwriter, with an international reputation for her solo work. Highly regarded as a solo artist, she has also performed with musicians from the U.S.A, Japan, France and Australia, to great acclaim and instant fandom. She will play an exclusive performance as part of Fete de la Musique accompanied by Tim O'Shannassy (Paradise Motel, Midnight Scavengers) on drums, Katie Dixon (Powerline Sneakers) on bass and Dan Sullivan (James McCann and the New Vindictives) on guitar.

The Seven Ups (7.30 PM)
Blending influences from 1970s Nigerian Afrobeat with the deepest of street Funk, this groupe is the original 7-piece party band out of Melbourne. Expect unrestrained solos by unkempt horns over an unpretentious rhythm section whose only interest is laying it down!

Dj Edd Fisher (througout the day)
Purveyor of all things refined in dance music, host of Tomorrowland on PBS and founding member of Wax’o Paradiso; Edd Fisher has been a key figure in Melbourne’s scene of late, holding down residencies all over and keeping many a dancefloor cosy until the early hours.

Trio Benoit play a delicious blend of French chanson and jazz.
Taking inspiration from Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour, Django Reinhardt,
Edith Piaf and Serge Gainsbourg. Accordion,Double Bass and Guitar
bring this fantastic music to life. It is joyous, uplifting and fun. Enjoy!

Starring DAVE EVANS (accordion),

Dave has played piano accordion professionally for more than twenty five years.
He's a founding member of The Band Who Knew Too Much,who continues to write,
play and tour.  He has worked as a health musician at Royal Melbourne Hospital for four years.
He has recorded with many artists over the years. Recently he’s been playing original songs with
Dan Warner, cabaret with Mikelangelo, Argentine tango with Tango Mundo, French with Christophe Genoux,
performing a live score in Europe Asia and the US. He continues to perform solo
and as part of ensembles around Melbourne playing a Klezmer/French/Tango/Balkan/Jazz mix up.

  
JAMES SHERLOCK (guitar),

James was the winner of the Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award.
As a bandleader James has released six albums, and appeared on many recordings for other artists.
He works with a variety of Australia's finest musicians as well as many visiting artists including
New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones, New York jazz vocalists Sheila Jordan, Chris McNulty and
Cyrille Aimee and master drummers Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Jon Riley. 

ADAM SPIEGL (double bass) 

Being part of different music groups (L.A.A, Jack Pantazis Group, NLT or the Erica Bramham Quartet)
Adam is an in demand acoustic and electric bass player based in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2015, he was selected as one of 10 semi-finalists in the National Jazz Awards,
Australia’s most prestigious award for young jazz musicians.

Launched in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique also now known as Make Music Day or World Music Day is celebrated each year on or around June 21, the day of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
The slogan of the festival “Faites de la musique” (Make music) is a play on the French words for “Fête de la Musique”
