Gallipoli: a shrine of remembrance shared by France and Australia

john_horne_abc_400_01Professor John Horne, from Trinity College, Dublin gave an interview on ABC TV on French soldiers’ experiences at Gallipoli, who fought side by side with Australian diggers.

Whilst there were 78,000 ANZAC, and the Australians suffered 33,000 casualties and 10,000 dead, the French deployed 79,000 soldiers, suffered 27,000 casualties and 9,300 dead. Facing the forces of the Ottoman Empire, the British and the French found warfare that was identical to that in the Western Front: Gallipoli thus became an integral part of the Great War.
