COP28 in Dubai - Meeting with the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi
Communiqué issued by the President’s Office.
The President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron, held talks with Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai, on Friday, 1st December 2023.
This exchange follows Minister Modi’s visit to Paris on 14th July, during which several areas of bilateral cooperation were agreed upon and deepened, as well as their exchanges on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.
Discussions focused mainly on their shared determination to combat climate change by accelerating the energy transition.
The two leaders agreed that reducing coal consumption was a priority, and that each country should undertake its own transition, in line with the terms of the Paris Agenda for People and the Planet agreed upon in June 2023. To achieve this, President Macron stressed the need for greater global investment in low-carbon energies, including civil nuclear power and the conversion of existing coal-fired power plants.
The two leaders also discussed the close bilateral relations between the two countries in strategic areas, particularly the nuclear sector, armament issues, space, the hosting of sporting competitions, and artificial intelligence, all of which represent as many opportunities for our two countries.
