Meet Anshika Gambhir, August Alumni of the Month: A dynamic fashion professional whose journey spans from NIFT Hyderabad to luxury brand management in France. With extensive experience across leading brands and a passion for innovation, Anshika Gambhir offers unique insights into the value of international education in the career.

Q: Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your educational background and current role?

 

A: I come from the northern part of India, where I completed my early education. During the initial years, I had two choices; either to pursue a career in Fashion or become scientis. I chose to pursue a career in fashion over becoming a scientist, mainly because I believe fashion can be a resilient industry even in challenging economic times and it employs many women, aligning with my values. 

 

I did my undergraduate degree at NIFT in Hyderabad and later participated in an exchange program in Lille, France, at ENSAIT. Although I was pursuing a Bachelor of Fashion Technology in India, I studied luxury brand management in France. The education there was very practical, focusing on real-world applications, case studies and exposure to global perspectives. I learned a lot about supply chain management, consumer behaviour and even new tools like 3D modelling.

Professionally, recently, I was working as an Assistant Director at Bewakoof, I have also worked with various organizations such as Decathlon, Myntra and Curefit, covering roles in quality, sustainability, retail, marketing and business strategy. Recently, I started my venture and am also planning to pursue a master’s degree abroad to strengthen my management skills.

 

Q: Could you tell me more about your experience studying in France?

 

A: Studying in France was very different from what I was used to in India. The education system there is much more focused on practical learning rather than just theory. We had classes with a diverse group of students from around the world and learned from industry experts about luxury markets, consumer behaviour and supply chain management. This exposure gave me a global perspective that was difficult to gain in India.

 

I also learned a lot about different tools and techniques, like supply chain management software, that allowed us to simulate various scenarios and apply theoretical knowledge practically. Life in France was amazing. I lived in a hostel with people from various nationalities and we frequently participated in cultural exchanges, sports and other events, which enriched my understanding of different cultures. 

 

Q: Many potential students think that the French language can be a barrier while studying in France. Did you experience any challenges in that regard?

 

A: When I first arrived in France, I didn’t know much French, but I learned quickly. It is true that older generations may not speak English fluently, but they are very welcoming and accommodating. Most people below the age of 40 speak fluent English, so language was not a major barrier. It was more of a motivation to learn French.

 

Q: What advice would you give to students considering studying in France, especially in the field of fashion?

 

A: If you’re passionate about fashion, France is a great place to study. Paris is a hub and capital of the fashion industry and being there provides a unique opportunity to experience the industry up close. The education system there emphasizes practical learning and global perspectives, which are invaluable in the fashion world. Additionally, France offers a good work-life balance, which is a great advantage.
