The French Institute of Jerusalem (IFJ) and the French Institute of the Near East (IFPO) are co-organizing this year a series of conferences supported by the French Institute of Paris (Fonds d'Alembert).
The Alembert Fund is a call for projects launched each year by the French Institute to support the Debate of ideas (round tables, dialogues, forums, meetings) organized by the French cultural network abroad. (French Institutes, French Alliances). Since 2011, the Alembert Fund has allowed the holding of several international symposia in Palestinian universities (Hebron, Birzeit, An-Najah, Bethlehem).
This year, the IFJ and the IFPO propose a series of conferences on the theme of relations between Europe and the Middle East for a century, under the following title: "1919/1989/2019 / Regards croisés Europe - Middle East".
The years 1919 and 1989 were major turning points in international relations. In Europe as in the Middle East, the hopes of a new world order based on law and democratic principles are quickly stifled by the rise of nationalism and the return of Realpolitik. In 2019, as the European Union faces major challenges threatening its existence and while the prospects for a lasting peace in the Middle East seem more distant than ever, it is urgent to reflect together - between researcher s but also between actors of European and Palestinian political and intellectual life - about the 1919 and 1989 legacy in our societies. This series of conferences also aims to question Europe-Middle East relations at different scales and over a long period of time, both politically and culturally and socially.
This second conference-debate will be held at Birzeit University and will focus on the different solidarity networks in Europe for the Palestinians and on the "Palestine" issue. It will be a question of how solidarity is established between populations and what can be achieved (or not) from this type of link. The emergence of European popular solidarity movements vis-à-vis Palestine and their role in national debates will be discussed. Finally, the role of European development aid in the Palestinian economy will be discussed.

Two speakers will propose their reflection:
- Alexandre Mamarbachi, PhD student in political science at Paris Nanterre University
- Abdaljawad Hamayel, PhD student in social sciences at Birzeit University.
Alexandre Mamarbachi is a doctoral student in political science at the University Paris Nanterre, attached to the Institute of Social Sciences Policy (ISP). He has been a Temporary Attaché of Education and Research (ATER) in the Department of Law and Political Science at this university. He teaches Economics and Social Sciences at the Lycée (Versailles Academy). Her doctoral thesis, under the direction of Mrs. Annie Collovald, will be defended in December 2019 at the University Paris Nanterre, with the title Emergence, construction and transformation of a "cause" / Sociology history of devotion to the "cause "Palestinians: 1960-2010 / Historical research and ethnographic survey.
Abdaljawad Hamayel
Abdaljawad Hamayel is a PhD student in Social Sciences at Birzeit University. His research focuses on the politics of resistance and the imaginations of anti-colonial movements. He is also interested in how the Palestinian struggle has been divided into various discourses stemming not only from the rise of competing ideologies but also from socio-economic processes. He writes his thesis on the second Palestinian intifada, focused on resistance formations.Conferences
