The 3 continents festival in Nantes

3continents_4003 Continents Festival in Nantes: Cinema without borders

For its 36th edition, the 3 Continents Festival is back in Nantes from November 25th to December 2nd. It explores the cinema from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Promoting cinema in Southern countries

Every year, the cinema in Asia, Africa and Latin America comes to France, in the darkened rooms of Nantes. From November 25th to December 2nd, the 3 Continents Festival broadcasts unreleased or restored films and documentaries.

What’s its goal? To promote cinema industries often neglected, by broadcasting films out of their countries of origin.

Since its creation in 1979, this event has revealed many breakthroughs artists, like Wong Kar-Wai, director of In the Mood for Love.

The festival program

For the 2014 edition, the festival invites spectators to discover Colombia, China and Senegal through unreleased films.

  • A LOOK at the Colombian cinema. Through about 30 films, you will discover the films of directors Nicolás Rincón Gille, José María Arzuaga and others.
  • A LOOK BACK at the career of Chinese film-maker Yu Lik-Wai. As director of photography of Jia Zhang-ke, (Touch of Sin), he became a reference in today's cinema.
  • A TRIBUTE to the Senegalese film-maker Khady Sylla, deceased in 2013. Her last documentary, Une simple parole (A simple word) will be broadcasted.

A selection of "competition" films are also planned, with 5 awards and previews. Two focuses are also planned: one on the Belgian cinema, the other on the revolutions of the Arab Spring.

“Produire au Sud”: projects and films

Created in 2000 in France by the 3 Continents Festival, Produire au Sud (Producing in the South) is a training and international coproduction workshop. It occurs in Nantes during the festival.

What’s its goal? To boost the emergence of cinemas from countries where structures are not sufficient.

This workshop is designed for young directors and producers from Africa, Asia and Latin America, chosen depending on their file. During their stay in France, they benefit from a follow-up in their projects. They receive the tools needed to defend their films and to complete them.

The gamble of this workshop? To discover new talents from tomorrow's cinema. And help directors contact potential producers more easily.
