Call for applications - Street Art Crisscrossed Residence between the Friche Belle de Mai (Marseille, France) and the French Institute in Algeria (Algiers, Algeria)


 

For the first time, the French Institute in Algeria organises with the Art factory from Marseille "Friche de la Belle de Mai" and Algerian company Rhizome a street art crisscrossed residence and opens a call for applications.

 

The 4-weeks residence will be held from mid-August to mid-September 2017 simultaneously at the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille and in the Campus France Office in Algiers.

Call for applications open until April 4, 2017.

  Résidence croisée en Street Art entre la Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille) et l'Institut français d'Algérie

4 street-artists, two Algerian and two French, will be chosen to make two pieces together:

 

  • the first will be made in the Friche la Belle de Mai neighbourhood in Marseille,
  • the second will be made in the Campus France Office in Algiers.
  • The two pieces of artwork will be designed to echo to each other across the Mediterranean Sea, and create as such create an artistic bond between the cities of Algiers and Marseille.

The art project is the outcome of the determination of decision-makers to boost Algerian-French art production, and thus to create cultural and professional bridges between young rising artists by offering a stimulating creation and work environment.

Theme of the residence: youth under the spotlight

The two pieces of artwork will illustrate the questions and thinking of the young: What do I want to do with my life? Who do I want to become? What are my dreams, my desires?... All of this while creating a bond between the city of Algiers and Marseille.


The artists will have to express their vision and their offers regarding the themes.

Eligibility criteria

  • Art discipline: street art
  • Be under 35 years old
  • Have an Algerian citizenship and live in Algeria, or have a French citizenship and live in Marseille
  • Present a book of previous art pieces

 

Hosting terms and conditions

  • Catering, housing, transports, visa fees, tutorship and production expense will all be at the charge of the French Institute in Algeria and the Friche la Belle de Mai.
  • Rhizome will be in charge of supervision of the organisation of the residence in Algiers.
  • Two "tutors" will also be named to help artists work, one in Marseille and the second in Algiers. Their role will be to monitor the art piece project and put in relation street-artists with local artists from various art spheres (literature, cinema, photography and other).

 

Agenda

The cross-residence will occur according to the following agenda:

- August 22 to September 4, 2017: residence at Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille)
- September 5 to 19, 2017: residence at Campus France Algiers (Hydra)

  • La Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille)

La Friche la Belle de Mai is both a workspace for 70 resident entities (400 artists and producers work there on a daily basis) and an art gallery (600 public art offers every year, from workshops for young audience to major festivals).

  • Campus France Algiers

Campus France Algiers (located in Hydra) is the dedicated space for the greeting of students who wish to continue their studies in France: information, application form filing, documents, workshops and orientation interviews, workshop for the creation of resumes, information days and more are available. With about 20,000 students every year aged 17-25 in average, it's the most significant Campus France office in Algeria. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius opened the office four years ago. With an inner courtyard, a cafeteria and a media centre, the office is a welcoming and nice space for students.

  • Rhizome

Rhizome strives to be a civilian company offering various services in: advice, planning and organisation of events in relation with arts and culture. Whether it's through research, strategic thinking, planning, assessment or direct service provision, the core activities of Rhizome focus on the optimisation and maximisation of available cultural resources. The term "Rhizome" comes from the rhizomatic philosophy by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari which implies a horizontal, multidirectional and strong contrasts with the principles of connections, heterogeneity and multiplicity in a non-hierarchical system.
