MARPOL 2024 conference “Coastal Communities and Marine Pollution”
Mr. Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, Consul General of France in Bombay, participated on February 2, 2024 in the MARPOL 2024 conference “Coastal Communities and Marine Pollution”.
It was organized by the Indian Maritime University which has 6 campuses in India including one in Mumbai. The seas and oceans play a major role in climate regulation and are directly affected by climate change. Marine pollution directly affects biodiversity and its balances, whether climatic, economic or demographic, which, in turn, affects the populations directly dependent on maritime resources.
France, like India, are two maritime nations and their destinies are closely linked to the oceans. The Consul General recalled, during his intervention, the commitment since 2022 of our two countries to a bilateral roadmap on the Blue Economy which of course includes the issues of marine pollution. France has expertise in the areas of prevention, monitoring and management of marine pollution. It will co-organize the UNOC 2025 (United Nation Ocean Conference) in Nice and India will play an active role in its preparation.
Finally, he recalled that these global challenges must be addressed on an international scale and that scientific cooperation was an essential element for identifying and developing solutions.
