Announced by the French president in June during the Viva Technology fair, the 125 laureate companies and startups of the first French Tech 2030 were gathered for a start of year seminar on 26 September at Ecole Polytechnique.

In a context of strong international competition, the French Tech programme was created to choose high growth potential companies and offer a tailor-made follow-up to turn them into international champions. The 125 laureates selected represent companies specialised in ecological transition, the digital sector, training, space industry or health.

A seminar on priority challenges

During this seminar, the first promotion of 125 “emerging players” attended speeches from the deputy minister in charge of digital transition and by the services of the State concerned.

The programme included: in addition to the official and one-time speeches, discussion sessions were organised about the challenges of economic development and sovereignty More precisely, the idea was to improve certain points such as support priorities for the government in exports, the possible collaboration with major groups, public procurement, industrial implementation or the processes in relation with intellectual property.

A DeepTech priority

The French Tech programme offers strategic and financial tailor-made support offered by the government and “uniquely associated with the ambition of the France 2030 plan” in the sense that this programme prefers to target companies that come from the DeepTech[1].

These are startups or businesses positioned on “economic sectors or technologies deemed priority industries for France”, with a special focus on solutions that improve the industrial and technologic sovereignty of the country. The laureates of this first cohort should be able to achieve the major objectives of France 2030 targeting three issues: producing better, living better and understanding our world.

A complete support programme

In addition to this September seminar, the 125 players selected will benefit from complete support from Mission French Tech, an organisation playing this support role. The idea is to follow emerging businesses for a minimum one-year duration, with possible extension. The programme implemented, which was designed during this seminar, aims at bringing financial support, but also extra-financial support, through “personal and collective support in relation with the strategic goals of businesses, such as international development, funding, commercial development (public and private purchase), recruitment, territorial implementation, intellectual propriety strategy, regulation and cyber-security, and regulatory issues”.

Careful selection

The 125 companies were selected as part of the French Tech 2030 programme using strict criteria. They first must have had already started a business using their innovation (or be about to do so). They also had to prove a certain level of “technologic and economic maturity to prove that it would be relevant for the government to follow them up”.

To benefit from the programme, emerging companies must comply with precise criteria, such as:

  • Having their headquarters on French territory;
  • Comply with the France 2030 plan objectives;
  • Be an independent company;
  • Have received over the last 3 years subsidies of at least 5 M€.

[1] The DeepTech dedicated website explains this as “the ecosystem of startups changing the world through disruptive innovation”. DeepTech entrepreneurs indeed leverage “the latest progress of scientific research to better face the challenges of tomorrow. Their mission: offer products that will sustainably change our way of life”.
